Take back?
After my little rage at this project I took a much needed break from reality and have come back to it stronger than ever.
I have this tune in mind. It keeps me so grounded. So tomorrow. I shall have two, maybe three pieces of sound to experiment with. The first is a nature based sound. Using what was in Garageband to create a mixture of waves and birds. It sounds quite peaceful. The second is a piano version of this tune that calmed me down. And the possible third is a heavily mixed version of that tune.
Why Three?
Simply put, it's for me to gauge what is overly peaceful to others. I am working on a fourth possible tune which will basically be a heart..beat.
So what's left to do?
Experiment tomorrow. Gotta get some people to text out my stuff.
Formulate this poster with the steps.

Hand in on Sunday.
Boom.
Oh and then the presentation...
Whatever.
Sounds good?

Stuff
Okay so i've got one person who's keen to have a go.. Just need one more. Thursday can't come quick enough..
Video video video
Ohh yeah half hour early... Man this room is dark.
Okay so apparently I have to video my testing? Wow that kinda derailed my plans. But whatever. Will make plans to test my stuff out on thursday... All I have to do is really get the subjects to listen to what I've created. Simple enough right? Awesome!

The above widget is to a track that I created this morning. I'm trying to at present create a control track to ascertain the line between peaceful and relaxing sounds v stressful and almost annoying.

Whoops
So after spending half the night working on my first assignment I received an email this morning detailing that I might have done it wrong.. After checking my work it turns out that I have indeed done wrong. Instead of doing.. Four sources for one theme it's actually one source for each of the four themes.. It's times like this that I wish people worded things more clearly. But in anycase I have to thank my tutor for giving me the heads up about it today.. While it doesn't leave a lot of breathing space between me and the deadline she has offered an extension if I need it. I'll make that call later today. Back to work for me.

Getting Shit sorted
Currently hammering out my Design as inquiry assignment. It's going well so far.... By that I mean I know what I want to do... Now it's just doing it.
As for the Design Psych assignment, I haven't yet booted up my iMac so my use of garageband is nonexistent right now.. But will probably hash that out tomorrow or this afternoon if I have any time.
Okay! Update over.

Blurring the line between Music and You.
Okay so as you should know by now, my design psychology assignment is all about taking you out of where you are and placing you into a new calmer environment via a photography and some snazzy music. Now you might ask, what sort of music? And the answer would be that it's nothing like Will.i.am's latest single Scream & Shout. Rather it's a carefully timed beat or pulse that should theoretically be able to help ease your tension and relax you. Slowing down that breath and placing you into a nice calm state. Sounds ambitious right?
My tutor today suggested that perhaps natural sounds isn't enough. His statement echoed something similar that I had been thinking about over the past couple days. In order to be successful I need to give myself some more control. By creating the sound and doing some nice sound mixing I can place myself in the position of being in complete control.
As for the context.. I'm still thinking along the lines of a study hardened student who needs a break. But I'm sure it'll change as the project goes along.

Design Psychology - Heart Beat: Music May Help Keep Your Cardiovascular System in Tune
Music may calm the savage beast or, at least, make the workday seem shorter. A new study now adds cardiovascular health to the list of music's potential benefits, suggesting it can directly trigger physiological changes that modulate blood pressure, heart rate and respiration.
"Music induces a continuous, dynamic—and to some extent predictable—change in the cardiovascular system," said Luciano Bernardi, a professor of medicine at the University of Pavia in Italy and lead author on the paper published in the journalCirculation, in a statement. Understanding the mechanisms of how swelling crescendos and deflating decrescendos affect our physiology, he suggests, could lead to potential new therapies for stroke and other conditions.
Bernardi and his colleagues had previously found that changes in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems mirrored musical tempo. To extend this knowledge to the body's response to changing rhythms, they enlisted 24 volunteers—half experienced singers, the remainder with no musical training.
While participants listened to five random selections of Beethoven, Bach, Puccini and other classical artists as well as a two-minute segment of silence, monitors recorded physiological signals. The researchers found that selections with crescendos, especially those with a series of them (think: Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody), led to proportional constriction of blood vessels and increases in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. These measures decreased during decrescendos and silent periods. The team also found that "rich" music phrases around 10 seconds long, like those rhythms from famous arias by Verdi, caused heart rate and other parts of the cardiovascular system to synchronize with the music. Both groups experienced this entrainment, although the musicians showed a stronger response.
These results, Bernardi says, indicate that music's effects go beyond a patient's head. "It is not only the emotion that creates the cardiovascular changes," he notes, "but this study suggests that also the opposite might be possible." He believes the boosts in mood—including those pleasurable "chills"—triggered by music might also be a side effect of a physiological reaction.
Connie Tomaino, the executive director and co-founder of the Institute for Music and Neurological Function in New York City, has seen evidence of this mechanism in her own clinical practice. "The study hints at the possibility that some of these entrainment mechanisms act at the subconscious level," Tomaino says. "There's enough clinical evidence out there that shows this is true." She notes that even people in semivegetative states show respiratory changes when music is played.
Bernardi's study is limited by a small sample size and uniformity between participants—all were healthy Caucasians between the ages of 24 and 26. The authors suggest further research is needed to confirm and generalize their findings to the wider population and to other types of music.
Meanwhile, Tomaino finds Bernardi's study "really nicely supports previous inferences" into the science of music. (She is a consultant for a new documentaryairing tonight on PBS called "The Music Instinct: Science and Song," featuring an array of musicians including jazz, pop and rap and how they affect human mind and body.) She points to a paper published earlier this year that found a developing fetus is already equipped with the ability to distinguish changes in sound patterns, presumably in order to interpret and learn from the world around them. "We're prewired to be receptive to rhythm," Tomaino says. So, scaramouch, do the fandango.

Sick
Hello,
So last night I had a bit of a turn. Massive Migraine followed by vomiting and well you can guess the rest. Today I didn't get into the Design as Inquiry lecture/Tutorial which was disappointing.. But hopefully tomorrow I'll make it for a little bit of the tutorial if the tutor lets me.
So far these first two weeks haven't been all that great. Come on Positivity!

Project - Relax
For my project my initial plan is to create an audiovisual consisting of a picture (or series of pictures) and some natural sound that is possibly going to be recorded using my D5200. The reason I've chosen to do this is because in the recent week I was in Kaitoke and one of the things that calmed me down immensely was being surrounded by nature. I'm hoping to replicate this in the first assignment.
I'm still deciding whether to use photographs or video. But will try for both. I'll upload what I've done tomorrow night or Wednesday. Presenting both the static and motion videos on youtube.com
The previous post was an example of the sound of waves that I found on youtube.
As for now that's all I'm doing tonight.

Design as Inquiry Tutorial 01 - DOGON
While it was a tedious wait for the tutorial to begin, once in I found myself lost in the world of Design as Inquiry. At first I was having reservations towards the subject as I thought I would be overwhelmed by the whole writing aspect. But after hearing my tutor talk about how there's a gradual build up in the complexity of the writing standards I felt more at ease. Now don't get me wrong, I have great faith in my writing abilities - however it has been awhile since I've written a proper essay at Uni so this will either show me that I've still got what it takes or prove that I still have much to learn. In any case I'm keen to get started.
Dog/Dragon Hybrid?
You might have seen the previous post of a crappy picture of a Dogon (Dog/Dragon). It's what my ideal pet would be like if I was ever in the position to design one.
I'll do the reading over the weekend as at present I'm doing work for another class. I'll post on Sunday my thoughts of the reading and a bunch of other stuff that I can't think of right now.
Cheers,
Allan

Design as Inquiry tutorial 01
We were talking about what sort of pet we as designers would like to design and I came up with the idea of a dog/dragon hybrid.
Design as Inquiry - Lecture 01 - Introduction
Welcome to the world of Design as Inquiry. It's a wonderful place filled with magical creatures and people who stop to examine the everyday object...
Hey so today was all about the introduction to this wonderful course. A shortened lecture presented us students with the opportunity to really think about this core paper as being more than just part of the puzzle on our person journey through design at Victoria.
Personally speaking, I found the lecture to be... Absolutely interesting. The topics that were briefly covered seemed interesting enough and I'll expand on that in my post on the Tutorial later this evening. But seeing as how I'm all about structured learning this year, you can now expect posts on the lecture/tutorial every Wednesday Afternoon between 4-10pm. And my thoughts on the readings will be posted over the weekend. Most likely Sunday afternoon when I have time to blog.
I do have some things to post later tonight, such as my Dog/Dragon Hybrid but for now thanks for reading.
Cheers,
Allan

Itching to inquire
Tomorrow is my first lecture and tutorial for design as inquiry. I'm feeling quite relaxed about it at present. I know it'll be quite full on but that's where all the fun happens. Oh and as an added bonus I made the list for the early tutorial. So calendar updated! Also I removed physical computing off thy calendar.. Just no...
Cheers,
Allan

Falling into place
Seems like everything is falling into place. The only piece left untouched is the trimester two courses. But hopefully that'll be sorted in time. Oh yeah that reading assignment for Design Psychology... It's pretty interesting.
Meeting Set - Update
Ah Tuesdays....
Just received an email confirming that I have a meeting on Friday with the Associate Dean of Students at 2pm to sort out my courses. Kinda funny that I waited until now to get that email so I'll be missing Physical Computing today. Unsure if I'll bother going to it on Thursday as I intend on dropping it. Figured you'd appreciated the update.
Today I'll be reading through the first reading for Design Psychology. I might either today or tomorrow post my thoughts on the reading. It really depends on when I get it done by.
Also a friend of mine directed my attention towards the Google Docs application for android. Seems as though you can access all the info in the documents through the Google Drive App. I might copy my notes and extra bits into that so if I don't have my computer on hand I can still pull it up on my phone. Thanks Technology for making my life easier.

What to do?
Okay so at the moment I'm sort of struggling to figure out when/how to get my courses fixed up. Do I dare skip tomorrows Physical Computing lecture in the hopes to drop it or what? Ah confusion... I hate you.
Fixing the study - update
Okay so I have what? This whole week to sort out my study? Yeah bring it!
Just received an email from the associate dean. She told me to talk to someone else to set up a time.. Unfortunately I've been unable to get in contact with said person. Might just rock on in tomorrow and sort it then and there.
So.. My aim is to head in around... 11am. But yeah.. Kinda disappointed she couldn't give me an answer over the mail but whatever works for her. Who am I to question the higher ups.
FYI - This is an update.
Cheers,
Allan

Design Psychology Lecture 01 - Introduction
Design Psychology Lecture 01 - Introduction
There's nothing I like more than being introduced to a subject than by watching a couple clips from QI starring Stephen Fry.
I found the introduction to be quite clear and concise. Helen the lecturer was very open about what was required from us as students as well as her as a lecturer. Maybe it was the setup of the lecture but I felt like it was more personal than what the previous first year lectures were like which I found to be quite nice.
Being an introduction to the course there wasn't much info on anything specific other than the course overview as well as those important rules. We were also given the first brief as well as the first reading which I have already made a start on reading a day or so ago.
It's a bit ironic that the first project is about relaxation since I'm quite nervous about it haha.
The class was split into seven groups and were given the task of recreating an emotion using an object. Please refer to the previous posts picture for what my group did. This task was a neat introduction into how we can contrast physical emotion into objects and was very helpful.
We ended the lesson somewhat early which was nice. It gave me some time to collect my thoughts and to figure out how to write this little post. On the whole I think I'm going to like this class a helluva lot. It'll provide me a unique perspective on design that I can later apply to the core media design classes next year.

Allan

Design psychology lecture
This object is suppose to represent anger. The jagged edges and the unidirectional pattern clawing into the ground and what not. Original idea was raised eyebrows. Very smart. Go us!
Monday Blues...
Had a bit of a late night last night. Woke up about 6.30am feeling exhausted and yet here I am writing another blog post.
So hopefully today I'll make a decision on the Physical Computing class. I'm still waiting to hear back from the associate dean on this matter. I'm so keen for Design Ethnography. But if I don't get in... I'll take another class closely associated with it.
But today though, my first lecture is Design Psychology. I'm looking forward to it. Heck, I've already been reading through the project 1 brief and some bits of the reading. Tonight I'll make a proper schedule to keep myself organised with the work load.
But for now though, everything is set for my day back at uni. Laptop is charged, mobile phone is charged, iPod is charged, and albeit that I'm missing my stress relief which I'll pick up soon enough everything seems to be in good shape.
I'll blog about my day everyday throughout the year minus days off of course ;-). I'll aim for a late night post but will try to do it in the afternoon after my classes have finished. You'll get maybe one, two, three or even more posts.
So hopefully that'll put me in a good position with my lecturers/tutors... But you never know haha.
It's for my benefit mainly. Just to get a diary of my adventures. Something that I can refer to. You know the drill.
Cheers,
Allan

Pre-Study: Finalising my programme for Semester 1.
Okay so I've been giving it a lot of thought and since I can't do the full media design programme this year I might make most of what Culture and Context can offer. It's a bit like getting the best of both worlds. I've emailed the associate dean to get her thoughts but in all likely hood I might just end up dropping Physical Computing in favour of Design Ethnography. Which will set me back a paper this semester however I think that won't affect my financial situation though I will confer with those who actually know about that either tomorrow or Tuesday.
Speaking of which my first lecture post should be up tomorrow afternoon. Design Psychology! How exciting! This my friends is a new beginning for me in this whacky world of design.
Cheers,
Allan

Testing the flickr link.
Preparing for Uni.
My goal for this year is to get a b+ average. So in order to achieve this goal I've laid out a little plan. First up is to do some pre-uni organising. Getting my laptop in order, sorting out this here blog as well as linking all my google devices so I can upload any bit of information through the day as quickly as possible. Google Calender is all set up for this trimester with a twenty minute reminder. Probably will set up my alarm clock to go off twenty minutes before the bus arrives so I can get there on time. So what else do I need? Well next weekend I'll spend some time getting whatever else I need to get the study done. Books, pens, pencils etc. But will have to wait and see what is required. So in the mean time it's laptop week for me.
Next week I'll attend the first Physical computing class to see if I like it but in all likely hood I'll email the associate dean and ask her if I should switch to Design Ethnography and use this year to bolster my knowledge of design before I tackle the major I so desire to complete. If so that means my semester just got shorter which is all good for me. What are your thoughts? Does that sound like a good plan?
Cheers,
Allan

New Year, New Blog
Hello,
My name is Allan Scadden and welcome to my new design blog for 2013. This year I thought I'd tie everything together with my google account which means I'm moving my design blog from tumblr over to this one. It's pretty neat because now I can have instant access to my calender and blog via my mobile phone.
This trimester I'm studying three papers. Design Psychology, Physical Computing and Design Inquiry. Though I might change from Physical Computing to Design Ethnography which is a trimester 2 class. Reason being is that I still want to major in Media design but I figured since I can't do that full time this year why not branch out and learn what I can from the culture and context papers and expand my knowledge on design. Hopefully it'll pay off.
A little about me,
My main passion is photography. I currently own a Nikon d3100 and have on order the new d5200 which should arrive early next week. Fingers crossed on that one! I've been working in the field of Digital Media since year 9 and would like to think that I know a fair bit about the subject. Last year I dabbled with study at Natcol which turned out to be a mistake as I wasn't really taught anything other than to really dislike my tutor who well.. I can't really consider him a tutor as very little tutoring went on throughout the duration of the year. After my study has ceased I re-enrolled at Victoria for trimester 2 and began studying Interactive Design, Creative Coding, and Digital Creation. I thoroughly enjoyed each course as they forced me to undertake new aspects of design that I wasn't overly familiar with. And although I only failed one project I still passed the year with a respectable grade... Cough. So this year my aim is to vastly improve on my grades and really make the most of what I'm paying for. Which is kinda why I'm doing a pre-study setup. Sorting out my calendar and blog and reading up on what each course has to offer.
I hope to learn a lot this year and I look forward to working with some amazing people who are equally as passionate about design as I am.
Bring it on!
Thanks,
Allan Scadden
